Boston’s hip-hop dance scene
Hip-hop dance has been around in the form of breaking, pop-and-lock, and other street-dance styles for decades. But its recent surge of popularity on reality television has thrust hip-hop dance into the mainstream. And we’re proud to see that Boston groups have been making big moves on the small screen. Their mix of popping, breaking, and gymnastics put members of the all-male crew Status Quo on the first season of MTV’s danceoff show, America’s Best Dance Crew, where they ultimately placed second in the nationwide competition. Phunk Phenomenon (1760 Revere Beach Parkway, Everett, 617.389.9111) appeared on BET’s 106 & Park this month, and their Lil’ Phunk dancers are the official junior dance team of the champion Boston Celtics. Want to bust your own move? Head to the hip-hop class at Jeannette Neill Dance Studio (261 Friend Street, Boston, 617.523.1355). Open classes cost $15, and more information is available at www.jndance.com.
